IDEA used eliptical strength to launch campaign on fitness |

November 25, 2003 By: Sheena Greenwood IDEA used eliptical strength to launch campaign on fitnessNews reports and research studies detailing the considerable health risks of obesity and sedentary living are appearing on a regular basis and some of the alarming news includes facts such as this: Fifty-five percent of all Americans are considered overweight. Since 1991, obesity among adults is up 60 percent while childhood obesity has nearly doubled over the last 20 years; More than 60 percent of American adults do not achieve the recommended amount of regular physical activity and nearly half of young people aged 12-21 are not vigorously active on a regular basis; and, Over 300,000 Americans die prematurely each year from causes related to obesity and inactivity and officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that obesity and a general lack of physical fitness are close to tobacco use as the largest cause of death in the United States. Statistics like this not only present a challenge to our nation’s health care system but they are also a clear call to action for all levels of fitness professionals and it is the reason why IDEA has launched a major initiative called Inspire the World to Fitness. This effort is designed to harness the energy and expertise of IDEA’s 19,000-plus members as a positive force to turn these figures around, says Kathie Davis, Executive Director of IDEA Health & Fitness Association. The goal of this program is to have IDEA’s membership of nearly 20,000 fitness professionals reach over one-half million inactive people over the next five years. We believe this is possible if, each year, an IDEA member inspires just five non-exercisers to commit to a program of regular physical exercise, Ms. Davis adds. Through our educational conferences, four publications and numerous educational products, IDEA is committed to giving fitness professionals the resources and tools they need to bring effective health and fitness programs to the physically inactive.
