Elliptical Trainer Review – Findings From The Study

An online study recently published within the Journal of Exercise Physiology was undertaken recently within the University of Mississippi. They carried out an elliptical trainer review and summarized whether elliptical machines really were an improvement on the traditional treadmill. The study took place within a rehabilitation setting for those with coronary artery disease and tested the recovery of those patients who were in recovery after having suffered heart disease.

The elliptical trainer reviews took place under the watchful eye of Len Kravitz Ph.D, who directed the elliptical study and concluded that, following numerous tests, the elliptical cross training machine produced a greater activity within the cardiopulmonary artery than those using the treadmill machine, even though equal levels of exertion were used as the controlling factor.

In this independent study, the Precor EFX 546 Elliptical Fitness Cross Trainers were used and found that those who were walking on the Precor Elliptical rather than the treadmill, were using a greater amount of oxygen (twelve percent) and the study has shown that the most common machines that are used in the recovery of heart disease patients were those such as rowing machines, treadmills, exercise bikes – all of which do have some limiting factors for some patients, such as those that cannot use a treadmill due to the heavy impact on joints.

Factors that were tested during the study were the patient’s oxygen levels, levels of exertion, heart rate, blood pressure and expired ventilation – all of which assisted with the conclusion reached on elliptical trainers.

The patients used were in the same fitness levels of the ‘deconditioned’ people we see daily – those that do not exercise regularly. The review most certainly helped point out that the best form of exercise, using a machine, seems to be the elliptical trainer.
